Hello fellow sportists, I'm off out for a long cycle tomorrow and while I can tackle hills a lot better than I used to be able to I'm still struggling on the steep ones, I never feel like I'm in a low enough gear, even though I'm in the bottom one! Any advice?

Ride round them on a flatter route ;-)

What shoes/pedals are you using?
You may be able to use the cleat/clip to pull up, so you share the load.
If it's a long ascent, aim to keep a steady cadence and stay in the seat. Concentrate on the rhythm/cadence and suck it up.

I have cleats Carl and they really do help but I need to work on my leg strength more, I guess it's just practice practice practice!

That's right - practice, tenacity and maybe a little strength training in the gym.
Barbell squat - will work quads and glutes Deadlift - will work hamstrings and glutes Calf raises - will work, er, calfs
For power/strength - do sets of 4-6, on your last set you should be very close to failure (i.e. a break of form)
